Geoffrey Rubin, MD, a pioneer in the development and application of computed tomography (CT) angiography for diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, has been named the chairman of the Department of Radiology at Duke University School of Medicine. Rubin is currently the chief of cardiovascular imaging and medical director of the 3D laboratory in the Department of Radiology at Stanford University.

“I’m very pleased that Geoff will be joining our team here at Duke as his track record for effective leadership and vision for the department's three missions of clinical care, teaching, and research deeply impressed our search committee from the beginning,” said Nancy Andrews, MD, PhD, dean of the Duke University School of Medicine.

“He comes to Duke at an important time as he will play a key role in the planning for the state-of-the-art clinical and research imaging technologies that will be key components of the Duke Cancer Center and Duke Medicine Pavilion facilities which are currently beginning construction."

Rubin will assume his new role at Duke in August, 2010.

"I'm thrilled and honored to be selected to lead a department that has an outstanding reputation for clinical and research excellence," said Rubin. "I have great respect for the faculty in this department and am very pleased to become a part of a medical school and health system that is considered one of the very best in the country."

In addition to his clinical leadership roles at Stanford, Rubin also serves as vice chief of staff, Stanford Hospitals, and associate dean for clinical affairs for the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Rubin is a native Californian who earned his medical degree from the University of California at San Diego. He performed his radiology residency and a body imaging fellowship at Stanford in the late 1980s and early 1990s before joining the faculty at Stanford as an assistant professor in 1993.
