The labyrinth at Duke Integrative Medicine is a gently winding maze created out of small stones. A few steps along the path encourages self-reflection.

Evangeline Lausier, MD, of Duke Integrative Medicine says, "Our labyrinth holds a special place in our hearts as a metaphor for each person's journey through the human experience. It is a soul-cleansing, moving form of meditation that is particularly appealing when you only have a few minutes to devote to a mind-body relaxation experience, and fits in well with how we live our 'work' lives here."

The Duke Raleigh Gardens offer a pristine respite right on the campus of Duke Raleigh Hospital. The gardens, populated with plants native to North Carolina, include a soothing water feature, walking paths, and beautiful foliage.

A myriad of additions are underway for the Duke Raleigh Gardens, including a water feature with a self-contained well, a beautiful garden sculpture, a rose garden, a bird house garden, and many new walking paths and benches for enjoying the calm quiet.

The Duke Cancer Patient Support Program's Seese-Thornton Garden of Tranquility is located next to Duke Clinic. With verdant greens and soothing shapes, it provides a tranquil escape for patients and staff alike. It was formally dedicated on November 8, 2003.

The Garden of Tranquility provides a restful, quiet space adjacent to the clinical setting of the cancer clinics for patients, family members, and staff to be transported to a different world, if only for a few minutes.
