Duke Eye Center offers the latest diagnostic testing and treatment for children's eye diseases, as well as eye muscle disorders in both children and adults.

Duke Eye Center Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Service provides care for children who need eyeglasses, as well as for those with more serious conditions including:

  • Blocked tear ducts
  • Congenital or childhood cataracts (including intraocular lenses)
  • Childhood glaucoma of all types
  • Congenital abnormalities of the cornea or other eye structures
  • Genetic diseases primarily involving the eyes and vision
  • Optic nerve abnormalities
  • Nystagmus (abnormal shaking of the eyes)
  • Ptosis (droopy eyelids)
  • Retinal disorders (including retinopathy of prematurity)
  • Strabismus (misaligned eyes of all types, including esotropia and exotropia)
  • Systemic diseases that affect the eyes (diabetes, metabolic diseases)
  • Tumors of the eye and eyelids (such as retinoblastoma and hemangioma)
  • Tumor-related eye problems (such as with childhood brain tumors)

Services for Adults

Duke Eye Center Strabismus Service treats eye muscle problems in adults that result in double vision or deviated eyes. Common causes of such problems include:

  • Earlier childhood eye muscle problems that have persisted or recurred
  • Eye muscle weakness as a result of cranial nerve palsies (involving the third, fourth, or sixth cranial nerves)
  • Myasthenia gravis-related eye problems
  • Eye muscle problems resulting from trauma to the head or eyes
  • Thyroid-related eye muscle imbalance

Additional Services

Additional consultation and treatments offered include:

  • Electroretinography (special testing of the retinal function)
  • Pediatric low vision evaluations
  • Preferential looking tests (special testing of the vision in pre- or non-verbal children)
  • Pediatric neuro-ophthalmology evaluation
  • Social work assessments and counseling
  • Visual field (peripheral vision) testing
  • Ultrasound evaluation
