Renee Halberg, MSW, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker and Duke Eye Center employee since 1997, specializes in the psychosocial assessment and treatment of individuals, family members, and caregivers across the entire age spectrum impacted by eye disease and injury.
A current special interest is working with infants/family members affected by the diagnosis of retinoblastoma and adults diagnosed with primary ocular cancers. Using brief treatment modalities, mindfulness based stress reduction, and relaxation tapes, Halberg has developed a pre-operative clinical pathway for ocular oncology patients undergoing enucleation or brachytherapy. Other treatment modalities offered are crisis intervention, psychotherapy, and group support.
Halberg’s clinical and research interests include the inter-generational transmission of trauma, health care disparities, and the development of consistent clinical pathways for patient care.
