Featuring Art from Students with Visual Impairments

The Governor Morehead School and the Duke's Touchable Art Gallery have combined to sponsor an exhibit of student artwork by kindergarten through twelfth grade students who are visually impaired.

The exhibit will be available to the public from October 15 to December, 15, 2010 at the Touchable Art Gallery, 2351 Erwin Road, Durham, NC 27705, 919-684-0401. Hours are 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please call to ensure a perfect visit.

The exhibit coordinates with Art Education for the Blind’s annual Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month, an initiative dedicated to improving access to the arts and art history for people who are blind or visually impaired.

The Art Beyond Sight Collaborative is comprised of institutions and professionals who have been working for years on the joint issues of researching the cognitive capacity of blind people to understand and enjoy visual information, creating the tools with which such information can be conveyed to people without sight, and raising awareness among both people who are blind and institutions providing services to those people about the research and tools that have been made available (www.artbeyondsight.org).

Visual art, band, chorus, theatre, and dance are taught at GMS to give students congruent school experiences on par with their sighted peers. This is the first exhibit Alice Zincone, visual art teacher at GMS and Betty Haskin, director of the Touchable Art Gallery have worked on together to celebrate Art Education for the Blind’s annual Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month.
