Close Encounters of the Final Kind: Mourning Rituals in America

Jennifer Gentry, a nurse practitioner with the palliative care service, will present on the history of funeral customs and practice, describing rituals around death, mourning, and remembering with vintage photographs and fascinating historical anecdotes.

This 2 class series (March 3&4, 2007) will include information on: signs of labor, stages of labor, comfort measures, pain management options, role of the coach, breathing techniques, vaginal and cesarean births, coping with unexpected outcomes, and hospital routines. Expectant parents are encouraged to complete the series between 33-37 weeks of pregnancy. Register early by calling 919-416-DUKE (919-416-3853). Fee - $80.

Getting in Shape After Baby

Bring baby and practice movements to regain core stability and strength. This 6 week series of classes is targeted to new moms who are just beginning to exercise after pregnancy. Moms should be at least 6 weeks to 3 months postpartum. If you experienced a cesarean birth, please bring medical clearance from your physician to exercise. Join us immediately after for “Motherhood: The New Reality Show”.

Bring the baby, pack a lunch and join other new moms as we brainstorm tips on surviving motherhood, offer suggestions for transitioning back to work, and share resources for staying at home full time. Class targeted to moms who are 3-12 weeks post delivery, however, any new mother is welcome

After identifying your short-, mid-, and long-term goals, learn how to design a realistic spending plan that enables you to save for them. Within that framework, we'll discuss the different options available for getting out of debt. This workshop will help you get back on track to living within your means and achieving financial success.

Taking Charge & Living Well: A Lifestyle-Based Prevention Program

A 5-class (March 6,13,20,28 & April 3 2007) comprehensive lifestyle program focuses on sound nutrition, moderate exercise, stress management, and smoking cessation to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke as well as help prevent or control such cardiovascular risk facts as hypertension, high cholesterol, type II diabetes, and obesity. The program may also be appropriate for those with a history of cardiac or other disease who do not qualify for a cardiac rehabilitation program but wan to improve their overall health and future risk of disease. You can attend the first session with no fee or obligation to attend other classes. Must attend first session to attend one or more further classes. Fee for series - $25

A class focusing on the decision to breastfeed including information on: advantages and barriers to breastfeeding; how to establish breastfeeding routines; techniques to accomplish satisfactory breastfeeding; how to recognize and avoid potential challenges. Dad/Support Person encouraged to attend with Mom. Fee - $15
