Stress Reduction Training to Improve Sleep Quality, Stress Physiology, and Cardiovascular Disease Risk Markers

Are you feeling stressed or are you having trouble sleeping? You may be eligible to participate in a research study on meditation, stress, and sleep.

Eligibility Requirements

This study will include approximately 200 men and women who are:

  • Between 18 and 65 years old
  • Generally in good health and not taking medication
  • Able to attend four study visits at Duke Clinical Research Unit
  • Able to access the Internet

Study Requirements

This study will involve participating in an eight-week stress reduction course. It will also require three study visits at Duke Clinical Research Unit within a 12-week period, plus a fourth follow-up study visit six months later to include:

  • Medical history
  • Blood samples
  • Discussing recent events in your life
  • Questionnaires

In addition, if you decide to participate, you will be required to complete the following activities in the privacy of your own home:

  • A meditation diary during an eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course
  • A sleep diary during the MBSR course
  • A wristwatch-like device that records your sleep and wake patterns for one week before and one week after your MBSR course

This study will not involve the use of any drugs or placebo.

Compensation

You receive the eight-week course, the accompanying meditation CDs, and other materials at no cost to you.
