Subjects are needed for a U.S. Navy-funded research study at Duke University Medical Center’s Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology.

Volunteers are needed for a U.S. Navy-funded research study at the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology to study the effect of exercise while immersed to the neck in water on cardiac (heart) function.

Eligibility Requirements

Subjects must:
■Have experienced symptoms (coughing up pink sputum, shortness of breath)  or treated for pulmonary edema during or after swimming or diving
■Be 18 to 55 years of age
■Be physically fit (able to exercise constantly for 40 minutes)
■Have no physical impairment that would prevent them from participation

Study Requirements

Prior to the study, subjects must come to the laboratory (for about an hour) for:
■A physical exam
■Pregnancy test if needed
■ECG if needed
■Orientation

The experimental day lasts about four hours.

Subjects will be instrumented with an intravenous catheter and have their heart and lungs studied with echocardiography and in a few cases magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Compensation

Subjects will be paid $150 for completion of the entire study.
