Duke University Medical Center is conducting an observational study to better understand nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by following and evaluating persons with this condition. Evaluations will occur annually.

Treatment for NAFLD will not be provided by this study. NAFLD is a common liver disease in the United States. The causes of NAFLD are unknown, but are likely to involve many factors ranging from genetic characteristics to personal lifestyle.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Subjects who have previously participated in the NAFLD Database study could be asked to continue their participation during the second phase of the study.
  • To be eligible for this study either as a new or continuing subject, you must be at least 18 years old and must have NAFLD or NASH-related cirrhosis.
  • You cannot have consumed significant amounts of alcohol within the past two years. We will ask you questions to check that you are not drinking significant amounts of alcohol during the study.

Study Requirements and Duration

You will be asked to come to the study clinic for a screening visit to ensure you are eligible. If necessary, this visit could occur on more than one day.

After enrollment, we will ask you to return to the clinic for annual visits for up to a four-year period.
