Patients undergoing liver biopsy at Duke can participate in this informational database and tissue repository that will ultimately aid us in gaining a better understanding of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and other liver disease processes.
Inclusion Criteria
- Subject must be undergoing an evaluation for management of obesity, a metabolic syndrome, bariatric surgery, or NAFLD by a Duke University Health System provider.
- Subject can be male or female and must be 18 years of age or older.
- Subject's alcohol use must be consistent with NAFLD.
Exclusion Criteria
- Subjects not competent to give consent for liver biopsy
- Any standard contraindication to liver biopsy (INR >1.5, platelets <75 x103/mm3, ascites) or any technical concerns on the part of the clinician performing the biopsy that may pose unacceptable risk to the patient.
- Positive HBSAg or Positive HCV RNA
