Patients undergoing liver biopsy at Duke can participate in this informational database and tissue repository that will ultimately aid us in gaining a better understanding of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and other liver disease processes.
Subject must be undergoing an evaluation for management of obesity, a metabolic syndrome, bariatric surgery, or NAFLD by a Duke University Health System provider.
Subject can be male or female and must be 18 years of age or older.
Subject's alcohol use must be consistent with NAFLD.
Subjects not competent to give consent for liver biopsy
Any standard contraindication to liver biopsy (INR >1.5, platelets <75 x103/mm3, ascites) or any technical concerns on the part of the clinician performing the biopsy that may pose unacceptable risk to the patient.
Positive HBSAg or Positive HCV RNA
There is no compensation for participation in this study.
