The purpose of this study is to look at how cells outside the lungs behave in patients with COPD (chronic bronchitis or emphysema) compared with healthy people, to determine what specific products these cells produce, and how they are affected by treatment.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify, participants must be:

• An adult, 40 to 80 years old, with COPD (chronic bronchitis or emphysema)
• A current or former smoker with more than 20 pack years
• One pack year is defined as 20 manufactured cigarettes (one pack) smoked per day for one year.
• Able to walk on treadmill

Study Requirements

The study will last for approximately 12 weeks and will involve three visits to the clinic.

Compensation

You will be compensated a total of $200 for your expenses related to your participation.
