The purpose of this clinical trial is to evaluate the carotid stent vs. surgery trial by studying individuals with carotid stenosis.

Eligibility Requirements

• Have severe carotid artery disease
• Have not experienced symptoms related to your carotid artery disease in the last 180 days
• Able to undergo either an interventional stenting or surgical procedure

You must not:

• Have had symptoms in the last 180 days
• Be at high risk for surgery
• Have certain conditions that might confound the results of the study
• Be over 80 years of age

Study Requirements

This study will require that participants have:

• A medical history review
• Physical exams
• A blood test
• Duplex ultrasound tests
• X-ray of the blood vessels in the neck
• Randomization to carotid stenting or carotid arteries surgery
• Up to five years of follow-ups

Compensation

You may be compensated for some travel expenses for follow-up visits.
