Antibiotic Prophylaxis for UTI in Patients Requiring Catheterization After Gynecologic Surgery

Study purpose: to determine if antibiotic treatment for patients who require catheterization to assist with voiding after surgery will help decrease the rate of urinary tract infections in the post operative period.

Age range: Females age 21 years and older who are having a vaginal surgical procedure and may need the use of a catheter after surgery to assist in voiding

Study Duration: up to 3 weeks after surgery

Study Activities:
-Complete bladder diaries after surgery
-If using a catheter after surgery, randomly assigned to receive Macrobid (antibiotic) or placebo to be taken for a maximum of 7 days after surgery
