The purpose of this study is to determine if regular consumption of a high nitrate supplement in conjunction with 12 weeks of supervised exercise training will produce a greater benefit in blood vessel function, muscle function and physical performance than 12 weeks of exercise alone.
We are seeking approximately 28 people (ages 40-75) with peripheral arterial disease. This study is based at the Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory at the Duke Center for Living campus.
This study will last approximately 15 weeks.
WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE STUDY?
Participants will be asked to visit the Duke Center for Living for several tests and to participate in an exercise training program.
Subjects will be reimbursed up to $200 for their expenses related to their participation (parking, gas, and time). Participants will also receive medical testing, membership at the Duke Fitness Center and supervised exercised training.
