The following is a guide to resources that can assist patients and their families throughout the cancer experience. This resource list is compiled and updated by the Duke Center for Cancer Survivorship.

Housing and Travel

  • Caring House (community organization): Caring House provides a home away from home for out-of-town patients who need a comfortable, affordable, and safe place to stay while receiving outpatient treatment. For more information about Caring House, ask your caregiver to put you in touch with an oncology social worker or patient resource manager, call 919-490-5449, or visit caringhouse.org.
  • Hotels: There are many hotels convenient to Duke University Hospital. Several are within walking distance or offer shuttle service to the hospital. For more information, call Duke Patient and Visitor Relations at 919-681-2020.
  • Host Homes: Sponsored by Duke Patient Information Services, Duke representatives can assist with lodging in area private homes. Please call 919-681-4688 for more information.
  • The National Patient Travel Helpline (national organization): This service provides information about all forms of charitable, long-distance, medical air transportation and provides referrals to all appropriate sources of help available in the national charitable medical air transportation network. Please call 800-296-1217 (24 hours a day, seven days a week) for more information or visit patienttravel.org.
  • The Corporate Angel Network (national organization): This volunteer organization is available to help you with free long-distance air travel to or from the hospital. There is no financial need requirement. Please call 866-328-1313 or visit corpangelnetwork.org.

Parking and Dining

  • Duke Cancer Center cafe is located on main level (O). Hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Duke University Hospital Atrium is located on the first floor of Duke University Hospital. Hours of operation are as follows: Breakfast 6:30 a.m. until 9:45 a.m.; lunch 11:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.; dinner 4:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.; nighttime 7:30 p.m. until 3:00 a.m.
  • Discount parking passes are available in the Pink Smock Gift Shop, located on the first floor of Duke Clinic. Discount parking passes are not valid for valet parking.
  • Valet parking is located at the Duke Cancer Center main entrance.

Counseling, Education, and Support

Duke Cancer Patient Education

The Duke Cancer Patient Education Program uses a multimedia approach, including the Resource Center, patient education notebooks, and a variety of other educational offerings to assist patients and families in understanding their options, making decisions, managing the effects of cancer and its treatment, and finding meaning in the experience. Duke Cancer Patient Support Program

The program provides support services to help patients and their loved ones cope with the impact of cancer on their lives. The program offers continued support throughout the cancer experience. Services include:

  • Individual, couple, and family counseling: Professional therapists are available to work with patients and their families to help them cope.
  • Support groups: Professionally facilitated support groups give patients and families the opportunity to share experiences, gather information and resources, and participate in educational programs.
  • Belk Boutique: Offers free wigs, turbans, hats, and scarves to patients experiencing hair loss as a result of treatment. Located on the main level (0) of the Duke Cancer Center.
  • Look Good...Feel Better program: Self-image workshops for patients. Counseling for self-image issues.
  • Volunteer companionship and peer support: Trained, caring volunteers provide companionship and support to patients and family members, inform them of available resources, and provide hospitality services.

Financial counseling

The financial care counselors can assist with identifying financial assistance programs, filling out applications for government-sponsored programs, and describing monthly payment plans. For more information contact:

Genetics counseling

The Hereditary Cancer Clinic offers cancer risk assessment and education to patients with cancer and people with a family history of cancer or other cancer risk factors. Call 919-684-3181 with questions or to make an appointment.

Nutrition services

Through group and individual counseling sessions, the clinical dietitian helps patients meet their nutritional needs and make decisions about healthy lifestyle choices and weight management.

Interpreters

Medical interpreter services are available through the International Patient Center. Call 919-681-3007.

Oncology recreation therapy

This program assists inpatient adults with cancer and their families in adjusting to illness, treatment, and hospitalization. Recreational therapy treatment intervention and general recreational activities and resources are offered. Call 919-681-2928 or visit Oncology Recreation Therapy for more information.

Oncology social work

Oncology social workers help patients and their loved ones cope with the emotional and practical concerns that accompany the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Individual, family, and group consultations are available to both inpatients and outpatients. To request a consultation, please speak with your doctor, nurse, or other health care professional, or call 919-681-4722.

Orientation to chemotherapy

Offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. in Room 2993 on the second floor of Duke Clinic. Call 919-613-6275 with questions or to make an appointment.

Pastoral services

Duke chaplains offer spiritual support to patients and families. A chaplain will contact representatives of specific faiths in the community if desired. To learn more, call 919-684-3586 or visit pastoral services.

Resource Center

The center houses a lending library with books, videotapes, audiotapes, periodicals, and free brochures and serves patients with cancer and their families throughout the cancer experience. The center is located on the main level (0) of the Duke Cancer Center. For more information, call 919-684-6955.

Pharmacy counseling

Counseling is offered in the outpatient Oncology Treatment Center daily by a pharmacist who can review treatment regimens, side effects, and medication reconciliation, as well as forward prescriptions to the outpatient pharmacy for processing. Pharmacists are also available to discuss treatment regimens and side-effect management with patients admitted to the hospital. Physical and occupational therapy

Duke offers a wide variety of outpatient (ambulatory) physical and occupational therapy services, including a lymphedema management program for patients with breast cancer. For general information about Duke’s outpatient services, please call 919-684-2445.

Stress and pain management education

While in the hospital, trained nurses specializing in stress and pain management are available to help patients learn how to manage stress and pain that can impact other symptoms of illness. The nurse or doctor can request a consult, or patients may call 919-681-2560.

Teer House

The Teer House offers a wide range of educational programs and activities to patients, families, and the community throughout the year, with a focus on women’s health and family health issues. To learn more, call 919-477-2644 or see a list of upcoming events a the Teer House.

Cornucopia House (a community organization)

Cornucopia House offers free classes on complementary therapies including nutrition, herbal supplements, yoga, caregiving skills, and more. The Cornucopia House also offers support groups, massages, and a wide variety of helpful services. For more information, call 919-401-9333 or visit cancersupport4u.org.
