Below is list of frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your appointment at the Duke Cancer Institute.
We will process claims for your services with your insurance carriers. You will be asked to pay amounts not covered by your insurance, such as co-pays, deductibles, and coinsurance at the time of your visit. Learn more about how insurance is handled at the Duke Cancer Institute.
Required lab tests or imaging studies may increase the length of your visit, so we encourage you to make any necessary child care or pet care arrangements. You also may consider bringing reading materials, a laptop, or mobile device. Free wireless Internet service is provided in most of our locations.
Parking varies by location. For appointments at Duke Cancer Center, parking is available in the parking garage for a small fee. Handicapped parking is also available in this garage.
Valet parking service is also available for a small fee. You will be greeted at your car, receive a claim check for your vehicle, and your car will be parked in the parking garage. A few minutes prior to the end of your visit, you may ask a staff member to call valet services to have your car waiting at the entrance you request.

Patients are seen at the Duke Cancer Center, as well as many of our other patient care locations and hospitals. After your appointment is confirmed many of our facilities will send a packet that includes information about where and when your appointment will take place.
If you choose to give the scheduler your e-mail address you can also receive e-mail reminders of the appointment and an invitation to join HealthView.

Who you see at your appointment will vary depending on your diagnosis and individual health care needs.
In most cases your appointment will begin with a nurse, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant who will review your health history with you. He or she may ask additional questions to help create a complete view of your treatment history and diagnosis.
As one of our missions is to train future health care providers you may also be seen by a resident or fellow on the clinical service. These trained doctors have completed internships and residencies and are pursuing specialty training in the medical field; both are part of your care team.
After meeting with the care team, you will be seen by the appropriate oncology specialist who will discuss your treatment options and next steps in detail.
Our programs offer multidisciplinary clinics where patients meet with one or more providers in one day, including a medical oncologist, surgical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and other subspecialists.
The Duke Cancer Institute offer disease-site nursing, providing greater continuity of care. At each appointment for a particular specialty, patients will see the same nursing team. This approach provides patients with a single point of contact for questions or concerns that arise outside of the clinic.
During your visit, you may also meet with a clinical trial coordinator to determine if you are eligible to take part in any clinical trials during your treatment.
A cancer clinical trial is a medical research study in which people participate as volunteers to test many types of therapies such as new drugs, new approaches to surgery or radiation therapy, new combinations of treatments, devices, or gene therapy.
