Chemotherapy involves administering drugs that kill cancer cells or stop them from growing.
Your doctor may use systemic therapy, which is administered to the whole body by pill or injection, or regional chemotherapy, which is administered to only a certain part of the body by placing it into the spinal column, an organ such as the liver, or a part of the body such as the abdomen.
Side Effects of Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is effective at killing cancer cells, but it can kill normal cells too, resulting in side effects. Your doctor will adjust your regimen to reduce side effects as much as possible.
Side effects of chemotherapy can include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Hair loss
- Sores inside the mouth
- Diarrhea
- Lack of appetite
- Fatigue
- Increased chance of infection
- Tendency to bruise easily
