Mohs surgery is typically a relatively minor surgical procedure performed on an outpatient basis in the office. Be prepared to spend the entire day in the office, although three to five hours is the average time required.

Use this checklist when preparing for your surgical appointment:

  • Eat a normal meal prior to surgery.
  • Bring along some reading material.
  • Have a friend or relative accompany you or at least drive you home.
  • Avoid alcohol for several days before and several days after surgery, as alcohol can cause excessive bleeding.
  • Consult your physician to try to eliminate any medications that could promote bleeding for a similar period (e.g., Motrin and other aspirin-like medications, Coumadin, heparin). If you are taking any medications that “thin the blood,” you will need to discuss this with a nurse prior to your appointment.
  • Purchase the following for wound care after surgery:
    • Q-tips
    • 3 percent hydrogen peroxide or saline solution
    • Antibiotic ointment (Polysporin or Bacitracin)
    • Telfa gauze
    • Paper tape (e.g., Micropore)
