The stage of soft tissue sarcoma is determined by the size of the tumor, whether or not the cancer is superficial or deep, if it has spread to the lymph nodes or to others parts of the body (metastasized).
- Stage I: The tumor is small. The cells appear slightly abnormal, are likely to grow slowly, and have not spread other parts of the body.
- Stage II: The tumor still has not spread to other parts of the body, and is still small (less than five centimeters), but the cells look abnormal and are dividing rapidly.
- Stage III: The cells look abnormal and are dividing rapidly, and the tumor is large (greater than five centimeters), or cancerous cells are found in at least one lymph node.
- Stage IV: The tumor can be of any size but has spread to other parts of the body.
