couple.jpgProstate cancer develops when malignant cells form in the prostate -- a male reproductive gland just below the bladder. Prostate cancer often grows slowly and is very treatable when found early. Learn more about prostate cancer.

The Duke Prostate Center is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary care to men with prostate cancer while discovering newer and better methods for detecting, treating, and preventing the disease through ongoing research.

Tests and Treatments

Treatment of prostate cancer depends on the type, stage, PSA value, biopsy characteristics, and location of the disease and may include:

  • Active surveillance for men with slow-growing prostate cancer that doesn't require immediate treatment
  • Surgical procedures for prostate removal, including nerve-sparing prostatectomy and robotic laparoscopic prostatectomy
  • Advanced radiation therapies using the latest imaging advancements to map treatment
  • Focal therapy such as cryosurgery, to kill prostate cancer cells while preserving non-cancerous tissue
  • Medical therapy to treat patients whose cancers have progressed beyond the stage where surgery or radiation therapy alone can help
