From the first visit, through treatment, and recovery, our focus is on treating the whole person, not just the disease. The Duke Cancer Institute combines excellent support services with advanced medical care to help ease the experience of having cancer and receiving treatment.

The lung cancer program takes a team approach to helping patients manage their symptoms and treatment side effects. Our patients benefit from the services provided by our many compassionate team members, including:

  • An oncology nutritionist who helps patients maintain their health throughout treatment
  • A certified counselor who works solely with lung cancer patients to provide psychological and emotional support
  • An oncology pharmacist with extensive experience in managing lung cancer medications

These team members work closely with our physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses to provide comprehensive treatment and support.

Other Support Services

We encourage our patients to take part in the many support services provided by the Duke Cancer Institute.

Trained specialists and volunteers offer educational and psychological support to patients and their families through the Duke Center for Cancer Survivorship and its patient care programs:

  • Cancer Patient Support Program offers counseling, support groups, companionship, peer support, and self-image resources
  • Oncology Recreation Therapy Program gives patients opportunities to create, express, and smile
  • Duke Cancer Patient Education Program uses a multimedia approach to help patients and families understand the cancer treatment process

A wide variety of events take place throughout the year to provide patient education and provide patients with the tools and resources they need to maintain a high quality of life throughout treatment.

The thoracic oncology support group is open to lung cancer patients and their families or caregivers.
