Lung cancer occurs when abnormal cells (cancerous cells) grow out of control in the lung, usually in the passages lining the airways. Learn more about lung cancer.

At the Duke Cancer Institute, patients with lung cancer receive coordinated care from our experienced team of specialists, many of whom have been rated best in the region and nation by their physician peers.

Tests and Treatments

Treatment depends on the type, location, stage, and size of the tumor. Many patients take part in clinical trials testing the latest advances in treatment therapies.

The specialists at the Duke Cancer Institute work with each patient to create a personalized treatment plan that may include:

  • The most advanced imaging techniques available to diagnose lung cancer
  • Targeted radiation therapy to destroy cancer cells while minimizing the risk of serious side effects
  • Chemotherapy, which may be used before or after surgery
  • Surgery to remove the tumor, including minimally invasive surgical procedures
  • Targeted therapies, which use medications that inhibit cancer cells from growing
