Several approaches may be used to treat multiple myeloma.
- Stem cell transplantation. Blood-forming cells are removed from the patient’s or the donor’s blood or bone marrow. The stem cells are frozen while the patient receives high-dose chemotherapy and then re-infused into the patient’s blood stream. Learn about the Adult Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Duke.
- Clinical trials. Studies of new or experimental treatments may help some patients manage their disease. Find out about current clinical trials at Duke.
- Supportive care. Using drugs, such as bisphosphonates, the process of bone deterioration that can result in bone weakness and fractures can be slowed.
