Approximately 40,000 men and women are diagnosed with head and neck cancer each year in the United States.

While many people who develop head and neck cancer use tobacco or drink alcohol, one-third of the patients treated at Duke for a head and neck cancer rarely drink and have never used tobacco.

Our cancer specialists have access to the most advanced medical equipment and imaging devices available anywhere to test for head and neck cancers.

Diagnostic tools include:

• MRI equipment exclusively for head and neck cancer patients
• Dedicated PET/CT scanner that allows us to image the biology of each tumor
• Fiberoptic laryngoscopy in ENT clinic and radiation oncology to evaluate disease and response to treatment

This advanced equipment allows our specialists to accurately determine the type, location, and stage of the cancer to plan the most effective treatment plan, optimized for each individual's needs.
