Chemotherapy involves administering drugs that kill cancer cells or stop them from growing. The way chemotherapy is administered depends on the stage of cancer and where it is located.

Your doctor may use systemic therapy, which is administered to the whole body by pill or injection, or regional chemotherapy, which is administered to only a certain part of the body by placing it into the abdomen.

Side effects of chemotherapy

In addition to killing cancer cells, chemotherapy can kill normal cells, which can cause side effects. Side effects can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Hair loss
  • Nausea
  • Low blood cell counts
  • Mouth sores
  • Pain
  • Vomiting
  • Numbness and tingling in hands and feet

Your doctor can help you manage and treat these side effects.
