In general, many of the gastrointestinal cancers cause few symptoms until they have advanced to a later stage and spread to other organs.
General symptoms of all gastrointestinal cancers may include:
- Abdominal pain
- Appetite loss
- Blood in the stool
- Unexplained fatigue or weakness
- Unexplained weight loss
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Additional symptoms of particular cancer types:
- Small intestine cancer: a lump in the abdomen
- Stomach cancer: bloating, buildup of fluid in the abdomen, heartburn, indigestion, jaundice, trouble swallowing
- Pancreatic cancer: an enlarged gall bladder; jaundice; lower back pain; stools that are pale, bulky, and greasy
- Biliary cancer: fever, itchy skin, jaundice
- Liver cancer: abdominal pain or discomfort on the right side, a hard lump on the right side below the rib cage, pain around the right shoulder blade, jaundice
- Colorectal cancer: Constipation or diarrhea, frequent bloating, cramps, fullness, or gas, sensation that the bowel isn’t completely empty, sudden change in bowel habits or stool
