The five stages of liver cancer indicate to what extent the cancer has invaded the organ and whether it has infiltrated nearby tissues, other organs, or the lymph nodes (small organs that produce immune system cells that circulate throughout the body).

  • Stage 0: Abnormal cells are growing in the inner layer of the affected organ. These cells may develop into cancer. This stage is also called carcinoma in situ.
  • Stage I: Only one tumor is present, and it has not spread to blood vessels nearby.
  • Stage II: There is only one tumor, but it has spread to nearby blood vessels. Or, there is more than one tumor in the liver, but they are small.
  • Stage III: There is only one tumor, but it has spread to a major branch of blood vessels, or it is larger than 5 centimeters.
  • Stage IV: The cancer has spread to other organs in the body, such as the lungs or the bones. It may also have spread to adjacent lymph nodes or blood vessels.
