Esophageal cancer is cancer that begins in the cells in the esophagus, which is the long tube that carries food from your throat to your stomach. Learn more about esophageal cancer.

The Duke Cancer Institute offers patients the full array of the latest, scientifically-proven diagnostic and treatment options in a multidisciplinary clinic that unites experienced cancer specialists from a range of disciplines.

Our specialists see up to 200 patients with esophageal cancer each year -- 10 to 20 times the number as are seen at most other hospitals.

Tests and Treatments

Specialists at the Duke Cancer Institute draw upon a wide range of available treatments to design a treatment plan to fit the unique parameters of each patient’s disease, including the type of cancer, its stage, and other characteristics.

The Duke Cancer Institute offers:

  • Conventional and novel medical therapy treatments  for esophageal cancer
  • Radiation therapy guided by state of-the-art imaging tools
  • A highly experienced surgical team that performs more than 60 esophageal resections each year
