There are three types of esophageal cancer:
- Adenocarcinoma starts most commonly in the cells in the lower part of the esophagus. Adenocarcinoma is the type of esophageal cancer that is caused by Barrett’s esophagus.
- Squamous cell carcinoma starts in the squamous cells that line the esophagus. This type makes up less than 50 percent of the esophageal cancer cases in the United States.
- Recurrent esophageal cancer is esophageal cancer that has come back after removal or treatment. It may recur in the esophagus or in other parts of the body.
