Esophageal cancer is classified into stages 0 through IV.
- Stage 0: Abnormal cells have formed in the lining of the esophagus, but they have not yet turned into cancer. This stage is also called carcinoma in situ.
- Stage I: Cancer has formed, but it is only in the top layer of cells lining the esophagus.
- Stage II: Cancer has spread to deeper layers of the esophagus, and it may have spread to lymph nodes nearby.
- Stage III: Cancer has spread to the outer wall of the esophagus and to nearby lymph nodes or tissues.
- Stage IV: Cancer has spread to lymph nodes, either nearby or distant, or it has spread to organs in other parts of the body.
