Some of the symptoms of colorectal cancer occur early, which can lead to diagnosis. Others occur once the disease has progressed past the early stages. These symptoms include:

  • Blood in the stool
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent bloating, cramps, fullness, or gas
  • Sensation that the bowel isn’t completely empty
  • Sudden change in bowel habits or stool
  • Unexplained weight loss

Because symptoms may not occur until colorectal cancer is advanced and more difficult to treat, it is important to get a screening test, such as a colonoscopy, starting at age 50.
