One of the world’s leading breast cancer programs, the Duke Cancer Institute's breast oncology program offers women a complete range of services from accurate diagnostic tests, to genetic and prevention counseling, to state-of-the-art treatments for advanced-stage disease.

Duke’s Breast Oncology Program is multidisciplinary -- designed to allow a woman to be seen by a team of specialists including a medical oncologist, surgical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and mental health professionals, all within one setting.

New patients will be seen by the team of specialists in order to best map their treatment plan, even if they only require one type of therapy. The breast cancer medical care team meets weekly to discuss individual patient cases and to formulate and review individual treatment plans.

With a focus on treating the whole patient -- not just the disease -- the Duke Cancer Institute offers a range of support services to all breast cancer patients, including physical therapists, self-image resources, and the Breast Cancer Survivorship Clinic.

We also offer consultation with a fertility specialist to discuss options for fertility-preserving services.

A Range of Treatments for Individual Needs

There is no one-treatment-fits-all approach at the Duke Cancer Institute. We draw upon a wide range of available treatments to design a treatment plan to fit the unique parameters of each patient’s disease, including the type of breast cancer, its stage, and other characteristics.

Treatments include local treatments that treat cancer just in the breast or an area of the breast -- such as surgery and radiation therapy -- and systemic treatments that can treat cancer cells elsewhere in the body, such as chemotherapy and endocrine therapy.

The Duke Cancer Institute also offers specialized breast cancer screening and prevention plans for women with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors. Our team of specialists are dedicated to helping women at high risk for breast cancer understand and choose the right preventive measures to help maintain their health.

Breast cancer patients at Duke also have access to a wide range of clinical trials testing the very latest therapies. The Duke Cancer Institute is involved in basic and clinical research to discover better ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat the disease.
