Breast cancer is made up of malignant cells that form in the tissues of one or both breasts. Learn more about breast cancer.

The Duke Cancer Institute is home to one of the world’s leading breast cancer treatment and research programs. Our multidisciplinary caregivers focus on treating the whole patient -- not just the disease -- and offer a range of support services to help patients cope with their disease.

Treatments and Tests

Treatment for breast cancer is determined by the type of breast cancer, its stage, and other characteristics. The Duke Cancer Institute offers:

  • Prevention strategies for women at high risk of developing breast cancer
  • Advanced diagnostics for an accurate diagnosis in the most effective way
  • Endocrine (hormone blocking) therapy to stop cancer from spreading or prevent recurrent cancer
  • Chemotherapy to kill cancer cells
  • Radiation therapy to shrink the tumor before or after surgery
  • Surgery to remove the tumor while preserving the breast when possible
