The Shingleton Award was established in 1987 to recognize the “outstanding service and generosity” of individuals who are committed to the war against cancer.

Since the award’s inception (with a brief hiatus in the mid-90’s), Duke has honored 45 individuals for their selflessness in commitments of time and financial resources to the Duke Cancer Institute.

Dr. William W. Shingleton, Founding Father and Emeritus Director of the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, has been the moving spirit behind this prestigious honor. The force and vitality of his personal vision shaped the Duke Cancer Institute (DCI) as we know it today.

In turn, the recipients of the Shingleton Award, through their own brand of support, have continued to build upon the achievements of Bill Shingleton to create an institution that is internationally renowned for its cutting edge research and devotion to patient care and treatment.
