What Does This Measure?

The overall percentage of eligible pneumonia patients who received all of the measures of high-quality care tracked by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Why Is This Important?

Certain treatments have been proven to get the best results for most pneumonia patients. This measurement shows a hospital’s overall performance in providing recommended treatments for pneumonia.

What Are We Doing to Improve Our Performance?

Duke has enacted several initiatives to improve our performance. These include:

  • Antibiotic prescribing tools
  • Computerized physician order entry (CPOE)
  • Patient rounding
  • Electronic medical records (EMR)

  • Pneumonia-specific discharge instructions and patient education materials
  • Patient safety and clinical quality committees
  • Patient advocacy and support groups
  • Smoking cessation programs and patient education information
  • Tobacco-free campus
  • Balanced scorecard metrics
