What Does This Measure?

In a survey, patients were asked how often their doctors communicated well with them during their hospital stay. According to hospitalcompare.org, “communicated well” means doctors explained things clearly, listened carefully to the patient, and treated the patient with courtesy and respect.

What Are We Doing to Improve Our Performance?

Duke has enacted several initiatives to improve our performance. These include:

  • Patient advocacy and support groups
  • Patient-centered service training
  • Patient communication boards
  • Patient education materials
  • Patient rounding
  • Patient satisfaction surveys
