Jim Rawlings Jr., DMin, Director, earned his MDiv and ThM from Duke Divinity School and his DMin from Princeton Theological Seminary. His teaching and research focus upon the basics of pastoral care, how people of faith think about end-of-life care and advance care planning, and pastoral care of the addicted person and family.

He is an elder in the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, a certified supervisor in the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, a certified member of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, and a member of the North Carolina Chaplains Association. Jim is married to Mary Agnes. They have five children and eight grandchildren.

Deborah Morgan, MDiv, LPC, Manager, is an ordained elder in the North Carolina Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church and a North Carolina licensed professional counselor. She holds a BA from Atlantic Christian College and an MDiv from Duke Divinity School.

Prior to joining the department, she was the assistant director of Duke’s Cancer Patient Support Program and chaplain to the Methodist Retirement Home in Durham. Debbie joined the Pastoral Services Department in 1998. She has been endorsed as a chaplain by the United Methodist Church.

Peggy Davis Gold, MDiv, CPE Supervisor, is a Baptist minister and a graduate of Agnes Scott College (BA) and Duke Divinity School (MDiv). She completed her residency in pastoral care at this center (1997-‘98) and served for two years as a chaplain with Partners In Caring, an HIV/AIDS ministry. She is endorsed for chaplaincy by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. She is certified as a CPE supervisor by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education.

David Hormenoo, PhD, CPE, Supervisor, is an ordained Baptist pastor from Ghana. He graduated from the Ghana Baptist Theological Seminary with a BTh degree and later from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, with degrees of MDiv with Biblical Languages, MA in Religious Education and PhD in Pastoral Care and Counseling.

He served as a professional chaplain, multicultural minister-in-residence and the coordinator of the Visiting Clergy Partnership Program at the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. He is certified as a CPE supervisor by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education and endorsed by Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. David joined our department in May 2007.

Cary J. Melvin, MDiv, CPE Supervisor, is a National Baptist Convention minister. He is a graduate of Fayetteville State University (BS) and earned his MDiv degree from Shaw University Divinity School. Before becoming a full-time member of the Pastoral Services Department, Cary served as a local pastor for eight years and was employed in financial administration with Duke University. He joined the Pastoral Services faculty in 2001. He is certified by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education as a CPE Supervisor.

Annette Olsen, MDiv, BSSW, BCC, Clinical Administrative Chaplain, earned her Masters of Divinity from the Chicago Theological Seminary, ordination through the United Church of Christ (UCC), and was board certified by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), which she has been co-chair and now member of the APC's LGBT-Committee. Serving six years as a social worker, and 14 years as a professional chaplain in eight health systems (sometimes two to three in one post), Chaplain Olsen’s passions are combining clinical theology and health. She administrates spiritual care for the Neurology, Women's Services, and Children's Services, and coordinates our chapel programs and community-based care by multi-faith religious representatives.

Roger Velasquez, DMin, Senior Clinical Chaplain, is an elder in and endorsed for chaplaincy by the United Methodist Church, as well as board certified by the Association of Professional Chaplains. He holds a BTh from the Spanish-American Seminary, Los Angeles, a PhM from the National University of El Salvador, and a DMin from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.

His chaplaincy experience includes San Diego’s California Children’s Hospital, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, and Sharp Hospice. He has served churches in Los Angeles and San Diego, and worked as an educator and community organizer.

Biju Chacko, ThM, Associate Supervisor ACPE Inc., is a Baptist minister and a native of Kottayam, South India. He is a graduate (Bachelor of Commerce) of the University of Kerala in Trivandrum, India, and earned his MDiv from the Baptist Theological Seminary in Baguio City, Philippines, and his ThM from the South Asia Institute of Advanced Christian Studies in Bangalore, India.

Biju did his CPE residency and supervisory training at Duke University Hospital from during 1998-99 and 2004-2008. Biju has ministered in South Asia, Far East Asia, Middle East, and the USA. He helped set up the India Baptist Theological Seminary and served as its founding dean, administrator, and interim president.

Patricia Mitchell, Administrative Assistant, joined the Pastoral Services Department on April 2, 2007. Originally from Tampa, Florida, Pat worked at Tampa International Airport for the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority for seven years as a clerical supervisor and was certified as a notary public in the state of Florida. She studied office technology at Hillsborough Community College.

Helen Graham, Administrative Assistant, joined Pastoral Services in November 1999. Helen is a graduate of Connecticut Business Institute and has studied at North Carolina Central University in the areas of business and social work.

Duke Raleigh Hospital Spiritual Care

Adrian L. Dixon, MDiv, Director, led the development of the Spiritual Care Department in 2003. He was Duke Raleigh Hospital's clinical chaplain from 2003-2005 and has served as the director of Spiritual Care since 2006.

Rev. Dixon has a BA in religion from Campbell University and an MDiv from Duke University. He is a member of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, the Association of Professional Chaplains, and the North Carolina Chaplain's Association.

He is actively involved in the community and speaks at churches, colleges, and universities about the role of chaplaincy, spiritual care, and ethics. In addition to his full-time role at the hospital, Rev. Dixon also pastors a church in Knightdale, NC.
