Pastoral Services Education and Research

The mission of the Pastoral Services Department at Duke University Medical Center includes not only clinical services, but also education for hospital chaplains.

We provide Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) accredited clinical pastoral education (CPE) and supervisory education to ministerial students, clergy, and interested lay people. We also conduct innovative pastoral research, thus ensuring appropriate attention to the spiritual and ethical dimensions of human suffering and healing.

In addition, our Pastoral Care Volunteer Program incorporates a significant presence of local religious leaders and lay volunteers who, in various ways, represent the community and the best hopes for health care while nurturing a cooperative relationship beneficial to patients of all walks of life and faith traditions.
