The Positive Education Training Site (PETS) program uses a three-phase format to train people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) to be peer educators to their HIV-positive peers. Phase I is a daylong training, and Phases II and III are four-day residential trainings in Durham.
The PETS curriculum is designed to accommodate a cross section of learning styles, using adult learning principles to train and educate participants. Approximately 500 PLWHA have received the training across all phases since 2002.
The PETS program was initiated as Peer Education Training Site, and it was initially funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). It's now supported by the State of North Carolina Prevention & Care branch, Ryan White program.
PETS offers training throughout North Carolina, as well as outside of the state. Please contact our office if you have questions about the PETS program or would like to start a PETS program in your area.
