Midwifery Service

Midwifery stresses both the physical and emotional care of women, the involvement of family and significant others, cultural sensitivity, and respect for personal preferences.

Launched in 1999, the Duke Midwifery Service provides gynecologic, maternity, contraceptive, and primary care to women. The service now comprises nine certified nurse midwives (CNMs) and serves both Duke University Hospital and Durham Regional Hospital.

Every Duke CNM has been trained as both a nurse and a midwife and holds a master's degree in nursing or public health.

Duke's nurse midwives have experience working in settings that include free-standing birth centers, private practices, public health settings, and community and university-affiliated hospitals.

As experts in prenatal care, normal birth, postpartum care, and breastfeeding, our CNMs also help to educate people studying to become nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and physicians, as well as residents in OB/GYN, family medicine, and emergency medicine.

Duke CNMs work in a variety of outpatient settings including Duke's Maternal-Fetal Medicine Clinic and the Durham, Franklin, and Person County Health Departments.

Hours of Availability

Duke CNMs are available to assist with labor and delivery Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
