Cynthia Shortell, MD

Dr. Cynthia Shortell is nationally recognized in the treatment of varicose veins and venous disease. She came to Duke in 2005 with the goal of establishing a comprehensive vein clinic. In July 2007, under her leadership, The Duke Vein Clinic was awarded “best vein clinic in the Triangle” by Metro Magazine.

Dr. Shortell is an active member of the major venous societies and is widely published. She has contributed to and authored many text books on venous disease. Her latest venous achievement is the newly published book, Venous Ulcers.

Dr. Shortell came to Duke University Medical Center from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in NY. She received her medical degree from Cornell University Medical College and completed her surgical residency and vascular surgery/hematology fellowships at the University of Rochester, before joining the Rochester faculty in 1993. In 2005, Dr. Shortell moved to Durham to join Duke’s faculty as chief of vascular surgery.
