Vascular Malformations

Duke provides multidisciplinary, tailored treatment to manage all types of malformations of the blood vessels or arteries (venous malformations and arterial/venous malformations). Patients with even the most advanced malformations can find treatment at Duke.

Malformations are usually congenital and consist of a mass made up of an unusually large number of vessels or arteries, or vessels or arteries that are of unusually large size.

At Duke, diagnostic imaging is used to tailor treatment to the type of malformation. A combination of duplex ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is offered for this purpose.

Treatment options include:

  • Local excision
  • Endovascular catheter ablation
  • Local sclerotherapy (injection of a saline or other agent to dissolve small malformations)

Duke’s experienced specialists perform hundreds of such procedures each year.
