Renal and Visceral Artery Stenosis

For patients with renal or visceral artery stenosis, Duke offers specialized treatment that may not be offered at many other institutions.

Vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists work together to provide the full spectrum of endovascular and open surgical options to treat these rare, complex types of lesions.

Visceral artery stenosis is a narrowing of the arteries that supply the major organs. It’s most often caused by formation of plaque (“hardening of the arteries”).

Renal artery stenosis is narrowing of the artery that delivers blood the kidney. Renal artery stenosis is often associated with hypertension that is difficult to manage or uncontrollable, as well as renal insufficiency. It is caused by plaque formation or scar tissue formation after an injury.
