Duke offers a full range of therapies available to treat
valvular heart disease, including heart catheter-based therapy
for blocked heart valves, non-surgical valve repair, and
alcohol ablation therapy for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Duke pioneered the catheter-based treatment of valvular
heart disease and continues to advance this field with new
techniques for valve repair.
In the near future, catheter-based valve replacement will be
offered as a research option.
Medications may also benefit patients with valve
disease.
Medications may include:
- ACE inhibitors to widen blood vessels and lower blood
pressure
- Antiarrhythmics to help maintain a regular heartbeat and
pump blood through the body more efficiently
- Anticoagulants to prevent blood clots
- Cardiotonics to help the blood pump through the heart
more forcefully
