Kidney stones are small, pebble-like masses that form in the kidney or urinary tract. Stones form when minerals in the urine (such as calcium) become solid (cyrstallize). Kidney stones can cause pain or block the flow of urine.
Duke offers a comprehensive urinary tract stone management program, including a metabolic evaluation to reduce stone occurrence and state-of-the-art methods of stone removal.
Techniques used to remove stones include:
- Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)
- Percutaneous stone removal (PNL) (Nephrolithotomy)
- Ureteroscopy (URS)
- Laser stone fragmentation
- Percutaneous ultrasonic stone fragmentation
