Immunizations, education, and expertise for people planning travel

Programs

For people planning international travel, Duke offers immunizations as well as education and guidance about:

  • Immunizations that are required or recommended
  • Health and security issues for particular destinations
  • Caring for pre-existing conditions while traveling

If needed, Duke offers access to highly experienced specialists in infectious disease and tropical/travel medicine. A registered nurse with experience in foreign travel provides the pre-travel services.

Immunizations

Duke offers counseling about immunization/chronic disease interactions, and current information about required and recommended immunizations for various destinations.

Health planning is offered for travelers with pre-existing conditions such as cancer, diabetes, organ transplants, and HIV.

Travel Education and Guidance

Topics covered during the travel consultation include health and safety issues such as drinking water, sanitation, insect-borne disease, driving conditions, and personal security. This service offers destination-specific information that is:

  • Updated daily to keep abreast of ever-changing global conditions
  • Customized for individual journeys and itineraries

Post-Travel Illnesses

For travelers who experience post-travel illnesses, Duke offers access to highly experienced physicians who are board-certified in tropical and travel medicine.

Travelers who properly prepare medically before departure and follow the recommendations of their travel provider rarely develop illnesses related to travel.

However, illnesses may still occur in careful, experienced travelers. These illnesses can be mild or life threatening, acute or chronic, and can have a tremendous impact on the traveler.

Symptoms may occur almost immediately after exposure or remain dormant for months before the traveler realizes that he or she is not well.

If you experience symptoms that you believe to be travel related, Duke International Travel Clinic can arrange referrals to highly experienced physicians who are board-certified in tropical and travel medicine.

Several physicians at Duke are available with these unique qualifications.

Referrals for Post-Travel Illnesses

Depending on your insurance plan, you may need to see your primary care physician first, then request a referral before scheduling an appointment. If you are a patient of our clinic and have concerns about symptoms you are experiencing post travel, call 919-416-DUKE (919-416-3853) or toll-free 888-ASK-DUKE (888-275-3853).
