From raising awareness about stroke symptoms to developing faster diagnostic tests and new therapies to extend the treatment window, the Duke Stroke Center serves stroke patients and people at risk for stroke.

Emergency Evaluation and Integrated Care

For suspected stroke cases, Duke has championed the use of stroke teams, which are similar to the cardiology teams that provide emergency care after cardiac arrest.

Total integration with Duke’s emergency department means that when patients arrive with stroke symptoms, the team is activated within minutes -- so that evaluation can be done quickly and appropriate treatment started as soon as possible.

Expert Inpatient and Outpatient Care

Our multidisciplinary team of stroke specialists provides skilled and personalized care to stroke patients with all levels of needs -- from the time they’re admitted through their rehabilitation. Inpatients are treated at Duke University Hospital, while outpatients are served at a number of locations throughout the area.

Ongoing Research Studies and Clinical Trials

The Duke Stroke Center participates in a variety of studies and clinical trials designed to improve stroke prevention and treatment.

We are continually striving to develop treatments that work after the initial three-hour window for ischemic stroke treatment has closed, and pioneering blood tests that enable doctors to accurately diagnose ischemic stroke more quickly, so treatment can begin sooner.

Stroke Screening, Educational Resources, and Support Services
