Every 45 seconds, someone in America has a stroke -- a potentially catastrophic event in which the blood supply to a part of the brain is suddenly interrupted.
Yet, because stroke often comes without pain, people wait an average of 22 hours before seeking treatment. That’s a serious problem, because the best chance for a full recovery from the most common type of stroke comes when treatment begins within three hours.
The Duke Stroke Center combines an expert understanding of stroke with the most sophisticated technology available to provide stroke patients with the best possible care. Our specialized staff coordinates the comprehensive care of every stroke patient who comes to Duke -- from the initial contact in the Emergency Department through hospital care and the transition home or, if necessary, to a rehabilitation facility.
The Duke Stroke Center is certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a designation that assures patients that we have the technology and staff necessary to deliver the highest quality stroke care available.
The Stroke Center also provides stroke screening, educational resources, and support services.
