Duke offers comprehensive treatment for patients with injuries or other medical conditions that affect their ability to exercise, participate in sports, or maintain an active lifestyle.
Many patients come to Duke for treatment of injuries affecting the musculoskeletal system, particularly those involving the knee, shoulder, ankle, and elbow.
Duke also offers the highest quality services for women's sports medicine, pediatric sports medicine, sports psychology, primary care/non-orthopaedic related medical care and rheumatology care.
Common sports injuries include:
Many cases will improve with conservative treatment such as rest, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, bracing of the joint, and physical therapy.
Patients who need surgery benefit from Duke surgeons' expertise in the full spectrum of procedures, from arthroscopic ankle surgery, to procedures to free frozen shoulders.
Duke's surgeons have special expertise in all aspects of the knee and shoulder, including arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery, and surgical repair of tears of the rotator cuff.
Many patients can have rotator cuff injuries repaired with an arthroscope.
Most patients receiving this minimally invasive approach are back to their normal routine in three to four months, twice as fast as the traditional surgical approach.
Treatment for medical illnesses related to sports activity is also offered, including:
The Duke Sports Medicine team includes pediatric orthopaedic specialists with the skills and experience to diagnose and treat children injured during the course of an active lifestyle.
The program also offers seasonal Saturday Injury Clinics designed to provide expert care to weekend warriors, including young people injured in Friday night games. For more information about the Saturday Injury Clinic, please call 919-681-6354.
The Duke Women's Sports Medicine Program is led by a female surgeon and is one of only two such programs in the nation. Since 2001, Dr. Alison Toth has been building a world-class program that concentrates on the needs of our female athletes, both high-level and recreational. The program manages the medical needs of active and athletic women throughout their lifespan.
The tremendous gains in women's participation in athletic and fitness activities over the past couple decades has led to a rise in athletic related injuries and wear and tear in women. Through education and research, the Duke Women's Sports Medicine Program will have a great impact on injury prevention and will improve women's health outcomes.
